John Roosma was one of the outstanding basketball players of the early 20th century and a prolific scorer of the pre-NBA era. He first gained national recognition as a member of the Passaic High School "Wonder Teams," helping the team win three consecutive New Jersey state championships. Roosma helped the school win three New Jersey state championships and was part of a team that won 159 consecutive games.
At the United States Military Academy, Roosma became Army's first 1,000-point scorer and led the Cadets to an undefeated 17–0 season in 1923. He finished his college career with 1,126 points and was selected three times each as an All-American and All-Eastern player. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961 as a player.
