Conference USA History
The history of Conference USA dates back to 1995, when the league was officially formed after a merger of the Metro Conference and the Great Midwest Conference. Since then, C USA schools have grown into a powerful mix of athletic and academic programs across the United States. Today, the league features 14 universities, each contributing to the strong reputation of C USA teams in multiple sports.
When reviewing C-USA school history, several programs stand out for their accomplishments. Southern Miss, one of the founding members, built its reputation with dominance in football during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Marshall University, known for its passionate fan base, joined in 1997 and quickly made an impact with multiple football championships. Tulane, Rice, and UAB have also made important contributions, helping establish the depth of C USA teams across different sports.
Throughout the years, C USA schools have achieved major success on national stages. Rice University has been especially strong in baseball, winning multiple NCAA regional titles. UAB basketball has produced several NCAA Tournament runs, showcasing the strength of C USA teams in hoops. Charlotte, added in 1995, became competitive in basketball and later football, while Old Dominion, which joined in 2013, quickly earned respect with its football program by winning a division title and a bowl victory.
East Carolina University, a charter member of Conference USA, brought immediate recognition by winning multiple football championships and delivering consistent bowl appearances. Marshall added to that tradition with memorable bowl wins and strong seasons in men’s basketball. Over the years, C USA schools have shown balance across football, basketball, and baseball, proving the depth of competition within the conference.
The achievements of C USA teams highlight the league’s influence in college sports. Southern Miss holds the most football championships in conference history, while Rice has carried the baseball banner with College World Series appearances.
