In 2015, the Bellarmine women’s basketball team made history by winning its first Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) championship. The team, coached by Chancellor Dugan, finished the season with a record of 23-7.
The Knights’ championship run was marked by a balanced offensive attack and stout defense. The team ranked third in the GLVC in scoring offense, averaging 73.7 points per game, while also leading the conference in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 57.9 points per game.
In the GLVC championship game, Bellarmine faced off against Drury University. Led by tournament MVP Sarah Galvin, who scored 14 points in the final, the Knights secured a 67-56 victory, clinching the first conference championship in program history.
The championship was a culmination of several years of building for the Bellarmine women’s basketball program. Under Coach Dugan’s leadership, the Knights had steadily improved their record and competitiveness in the GLVC, and the championship represented a major milestone for the program.
Since winning the GLVC championship, the Bellarmine women’s basketball team has continued to be a competitive force in the conference, making several appearances in the GLVC tournament and advancing to the semifinals in 2017. In 2020, Bellarmine University transitioned to NCAA Division I and joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, where the women’s basketball team will continue to compete.
