Troy Taylor’s hiring as the head football coach for the Sacramento State Hornets:

• Taylor was hired on December 17, 2018, to replace Jody Sears, who was fired after five seasons as head coach.
• Taylor was a former quarterback at Cal and played professionally in the Canadian Football League before embarking on a coaching career.
• Prior to coming to Sacramento State, Taylor was the offensive coordinator at the University of Utah, where he helped lead the Utes to a 9-5 record and a victory in the Holiday Bowl in the 2018 season.
• Taylor had previously served as the head coach at Folsom High School in California, where he won three state championships and compiled a record of 58-8 in five seasons.
• Upon his hiring, Taylor expressed excitement about the opportunity to lead the Hornets and praised the team’s potential, saying “I believe the sky’s the limit for this program.”
• In his first season as head coach in 2019, Taylor led the Hornets to a 7-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in Big Sky Conference play, good for a tie for second place in the conference standings. The team narrowly missed out on a playoff berth but showed significant improvement over the previous season.
