Atlantic 10 Athletic Conference History

The Atlantic 10 Athletic Conference has built a proud reputation for excellence since its founding in 1975. Comprising a diverse group of 14 respected universities, the conference represents some of the most competitive programs in Division I athletics. Over the decades, the member Atlantic 10 schools have shaped a tradition of success that is recognized across the nation.

For college sports fans, few conferences are as exciting as the Atlantic 10 Athletic Conference. From its early years to today, Atlantic 10 teams have remained consistent contenders at both regional and national levels in men’s and women’s sports. This enduring strength has made the A-10 one of the premier homes for high-level collegiate competition.

The University of Dayton Flyers were among the four original charter members of the Atlantic 10 Athletic Conference in 1975, alongside George Washington University, St. Joseph’s Hawks, and La Salle Explorers. Massachusetts Minutemen joined soon after and became a powerhouse in men’s and women’s basketball. Other notable programs such as the VCU Rams and Richmond Spiders later joined, adding even greater depth and prestige to the growing list of Atlantic 10 schools.

Basketball has always been a hallmark of the Atlantic 10 Athletic Conference, with several Atlantic 10 teams making regular appearances in the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. Baseball programs such as the Rhode Island Rams and Fordham Rams have also made their mark, producing professional players who went on to Major League Baseball.
