Start of the Sacramento State Hornets men’s soccer program in 2014:
- The decision to add men’s soccer as a varsity sport at Sacramento State was announced on April 4, 2013.
- The program was the first new sport added at the university since women’s golf in 2000.
- Sacramento State hired former MLS player and coach Michael Linenberger as the program’s first head coach in February 2014.
- In the team’s inaugural season in the fall of 2014, the Hornets played a 17-game schedule that included matches against several other new men’s soccer programs in the Western Athletic Conference, including Utah Valley and Missouri-Kansas City.
- The team finished the season with a record of 5-10-2 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play.
- The first goal in program history was scored by midfielder Max Alvarez in a 3-2 loss to San Francisco on September 12, 2014.
- Despite the team’s struggles on the field in its first season, Linenberger expressed optimism about the program’s future, saying “We have a lot of work to do, but we have some talented guys on this team and I’m excited to see what we can do.”
