Which Team Has Won the Most Ever Super Bowls?

The Super Bowl is the holy grail of American football, the one thing every player dreams of winning in their career. If you win the Super Bowl, your name goes down in history; you receive a gold Super Bowl ring, and a nice pay bonus is added to your bank account. You can retire knowing that you’re part of an exclusive club (currently led by Tom Brady, who won seven across his 23-year career). But throughout the NFL’s history, which has seen 58 Super Bowls played across the US, which team has won the most of them?

Tied With Six

The Pittsburgh Steelers (IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, and XLIII) and New England Patriots (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, and LIII) are tied at the top of the Super Bowl leaderboard, with both teams holding six championships each.

Along with the Steelers and Patriots, the other NFL teams with the most Super Bowl championships are:

🏆 Pittsburgh Steelers: 6

🏆 New England Patriots: 6

San Francisco 49ers: 5

Dallas Cowboys: 5

New York Giants: 4

Green Bay Packers: 4

With the Steelers, their last Championship win came in 2009 when they beat the Cardinals 27–23, becoming the first-ever team to win six Super Bowls. However, since then, the Steelers have been on a downward spiral, and it’s now close to two decades since they managed to reach a Super Bowl final. There are various reasons behind this, including the decline (and eventual retirement) of longtime quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and all of the best quarterbacks in the AFC North have joined other teams over the years. Now, 2009 seems like an entire lifetime ago — and the Steelers are still a long way off, even getting close to winning their seventh championship.

The Patriots have had a better time over the past decade, having last won the Super Bowl in 2019. Ironically, though, Patriots fans have also had to watch their franchise decline since the start of the 2020s. Many attribute this to the retirement of Tom Brady four years ago, as the quarterback was the heart and soul of the team for twenty seasons. After Brady left, it was clear that the Patriots needed to start a fast rebuild. However, the franchise has sadly gone for the cheap option too many times, even attempting to replace Brady with Cam Newton, which didn’t work. Whether the Patriots can ever bounce back to where they were pre-Brady’s retirement remains to be seen, but it certainly needs to start with them getting an excellent quarterback, left tackle, and wide receiver.

Appeared in 11 Super Bowls — The Current Record

Regarding which NFL franchise has appeared at the most Super Bowls, it’s also the New England Patriots (11). Following on from them are the Steelers (8), Cowboys (8), Broncos (8), 49ers (8), and Chiefs (6), with the Chiefs looking like they’re soon going to make it 7 appearances if they make the 2025 Super Bowl. This is something that all of the $5 sportsbooks on the MDBS website predict will happen, with the Chiefs currently sitting as the favorites to win it with +500 odds.

Although it’s hard to believe now that the Patriots have become “just another team” in the NFL, the franchise is synonymous with the Super Bowl. From the early to mid-2000s, which is when the ‘Brady-Belchick’ era was at its peak, the Patriots appeared in (and won) three Super Bowls: Super Bowl XXVI (2002), Super Bowl XXVIII (2004) and Super Bowl XXXIX (2005). The most iconic was arguably Super Bowl XXXVI, where fans witnessed Adam Vinatieri kick that all-time classic 48-yard game-winning goal, which has gone down in Patriots’ folklore forever.

Wrap Up

Despite both franchises declining over recent years, the Steelers and Patriots remain the two leading NFL teams regarding Super Bowl championships. However, the Chiefs (4) and 49ers (5) are chasing that record and could easily surpass it over the next decade — which is why both teams are desperate to win Super Bowl LIX in 2025. For now, fans of the Steelers and Patriots will have to pray that there will be a Super Bowl upset in 2025, otherwise their record could soon be under threat.
