Famous Dallas Mavericks Players Who Defined the Franchise History

Mavericks Greatness Across Eras: Timeless Dallas Dynasty Unfolds

If you’ve followed the NBA for any stretch of time, you’ve probably heard the name Dallas Mavericks come up in very different conversations. Sometimes it’s about a championship run. Other times it’s about a generational talent. And occasionally, it’s about a group of players from the '80s who made the team relevant before it ever became a contender.

The Mavericks were founded in 1980, and while they only own one NBA title (2011), their story has never been defined by trophies alone. It’s been defined by personalities, eras, and players who carried the franchise in very different ways. When fans talk about famous Dallas Mavericks players or debate the best Mavericks players of all time, they’re really talking about how each generation shaped the team’s identity.

Best Mavericks Players of All Time

Dirk Nowitzki

Any serious conversation about the Mavericks all-time players begins with Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk played for Dallas for 21 seasons and became the image of the franchise. His 31,560 career points remain the team record, and his 2011 Finals MVP performance delivered the championship that had eluded the Mavericks for decades. More than that, his style of play changed how power forwards were viewed across the league. The fadeaway jumper, the floor spacing, the loyalty to one team — all of it made Dirk a basketball landmark, not just a Mavericks legend.

Luka Dončić

And then there was Luka Dončić, whose seven years in Dallas (2018–25) transformed the Mavericks into a nightly highlight show. Luka brought a different type of electricity. He turned in some of the highest-scoring seasons in franchise history, including a 33.9 points-per-game season in 2023–24. His 73-point night and the first otherworldly triple-double in NBA history (60–21–10) introduced the Mavs to an entirely new generation of fans worldwide. Luka is the first Dallas Mavericks player to be globally recognized among young NBA followers.

But before Dirk and Luka, there was a band of players who built it out of the spotlight.

Rolando Blackman

Is the first true star of the franchise. An 11-season Maverick and four-time All-Star, his No. 22 jersey now hangs in the rafters. He averaged nearly 20 points per game and helped the team reach the playoffs six times during the 80s.

Mark Aguirre

Aguirre was the offensive engine of the '80s. Between 1981 and 1989, he averaged 24.6 points per game in Dallas and peaked at 29.5 in the 1983–84 season. He was instrumental in leading the Mavericks to the 1988 Western Conference Finals, a breakthrough moment for the franchise.

Derek Harper

Harper added balance to the equation. Known for his defense and leadership from the point guard spot, he ranks among the franchise leaders in assists and steals. He was twice named to the All-Defensive Second Team and played a key role in those early playoff runs.

Not all former Dallas Mavericks players may have delivered a championship, but they gave the team credibility long before it became fashionable to wear a Mavericks jersey.

Does Mark Cuban own 100% of the Dallas Mavericks?

For more than two decades, Mark Cuban’s personality was inseparable from the Mavericks. He purchased the team in 2000 for $285 million and immediately changed how the franchise operated. Cuban was loud, present, and invested. He sat courtside, challenged referees, spoke to the media, and treated the team like a personal project.

In December 2023, Cuban sold roughly 73% of the team to the Adelson family in a deal valued at about $3.5 billion. He retained a 27% stake and, more importantly, control over basketball operations. So while he no longer owns the team outright, his influence is still very much part of the Mavericks’ DNA.

How Much Is the Mavs Worth Now?

Current estimates place the franchise between $4.5 and $5.1 billion, putting Dallas comfortably among the NBA’s most valuable teams. That growth reflects decades of competitive basketball, smart management, and the global pull of its star players.

Who Are the Dallas Legends?

If we use Dallas Mavericks retired numbers as the benchmark, the list of legends includes Dirk Nowitzki, Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper, and Brad Davis. But fans often expand that circle.

Names like Steve Nash and Jason Kidd are forever tied to key periods in Mavericks history, and even role players like Boban Marjanović earned a special place in the hearts of supporters.

Today, a new chapter is unfolding. Following major roster changes, Anthony Davis has stepped into a leadership role, signaling yet another transition for the franchise.

Some teams are remembered for dynasties. Others are remembered for eras. The Mavericks are remembered for the players who carried them through those eras.
