Big East School History
The Big East Conference is among college sports history's most storied and successful conferences. Founded in 1979, the conference has consistently produced some of the best teams and athletes across various sports. Big East schools have been at or near the top from football to basketball, volleyball to lacrosse for decades.
Regarding football, no other conference can match what Big East schools have accomplished over time. The first-ever Bowl Championship Series title was won by Miami (FL) from this conference in 2001; since then, five more teams, including West Virginia and Louisville, have also claimed national championships. In addition to these titles, countless bowl game victories demonstrate this group's dominance on Saturdays.
On the hardwood, many greats such as Patrick Ewing (Georgetown), Chris Mullin (St John’s), Allen Iverson (Georgetown), Ray Allen(Connecticut), Alonzo Mourning( Georgetown ), and Kemba Walker( Connecticut )have all come through here while playing their college ball before going on to become NBA stars! The list goes on with names like Grant Hill, Richard Hamilton, Derrick Coleman, etc, who had significant success after leaving school from within this league. It's no wonder many people consider it one of THE premier basketball conferences today!
Aside from those two marquee sports, though, we can't forget about all others either - soccer players like Claudio Reyna at Virginia Tech; baseball legends Alex Rodriguez & Mo Vaughn both attending UConn; even volleyball standouts such as Kerri Walsh Jennings, who played her collegiate career with Santa Clara prior joining Team USA ...the list goes on for days! All these fantastic individuals helped propel their respective programs forward during their time, ultimately leading them toward greater heights down the road ahead.
Ultimately, whether you're a fan looking back nostalgically or just someone curious about what makes up our nation's sporting landscape - understanding the history behind prominent East universities is a crucial piece of the puzzle when trying to get the complete picture. With so much success over the years, they've earned the right to be considered among the elite ranks!
