Big West Conference History

The Big West Conference has been a cornerstone of collegiate athletics since its founding in 1969. Originally known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, the conference changed its name to the Big West Conference in 1988 to reflect its growing presence. Today it features nine full-time members and two affiliate members, making it a diverse and highly competitive conference. Over the decades, the Big West Conference has become one of the most respected organizations in college sports, producing some of the most memorable teams and athletes in NCAA history.

Across the Big West League, member institutions have created a legacy built on competition and tradition. Each of the Big West schools tells a unique story of how it joined the conference and the success it has achieved on and off the field. The Big West Conference is not just a competition but a family of institutions that share a dedication to excellence, academics, and athletic achievement.

Programs like UC Irvine have become synonymous with the Big West Conference’s competitive spirit. The Anteaters joined NCAA Division I play in 1977 and have since secured multiple NCAA tournament appearances in basketball, including a historic Sweet 16 berth in 2019 under head coach Russell Turner.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has built its name on both academics and athletics, consistently earning All-Big West selections and national rankings for team assists in men’s and women’s basketball. UC Santa Barbara has also stood out, with Gauchos Basketball making deep NCAA Tournament runs during the 2010s, cementing its place as one of the premier Big West teams.

Beyond basketball, the Big West Conference excels in multiple sports, including baseball, volleyball, and soccer. Long Beach State’s men’s volleyball program has claimed multiple national titles, while Cal State Fullerton’s baseball team, though now independent, became a national powerhouse under the Big West Conference banner. These achievements highlight the depth of talent and commitment within the Big West League.

The Big West Conference has also made significant strides in women’s sports, with programs across the league capturing conference titles and making NCAA Tournament appearances in soccer, softball, and volleyball. The conference has earned a reputation for producing elite student-athletes who excel in academics, with many receiving national scholar-athlete awards.

With over 50 years of excellence, the Big West Conference continues to grow its legacy, uniting institutions from California and Hawaii under the banner of competitive athletics and academic achievement. Its rich tradition ensures that the stories of its Big West teams will continue to inspire future generations of student-athletes and fans alike.
