Christian “Chris” Steinmetz was one of the earliest great scorers in basketball history and one of the most dominant college players of the pre-NBA era. Known as the “Father of Wisconsin Basketball,” he became the leading scorer in college basketball during the game's first 25 years. Steinmetz starred for Wisconsin from 1902 to 1905 and became the school's first All-American.
In the 1904–05 season, he scored 462 points, accounting for nearly 70 percent of Wisconsin's total offense, while leading the Badgers to the Western championship. He was renowned for his exceptional scoring and free-throw shooting and established several Wisconsin scoring records. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961 as a player.
