New Era

Entering the post-war era, Aston Villa experienced a brief resurgence by securing another FA Cup in 1920. However, it became evident that their prime had passed, leading to a prolonged decline. In 1936, the club faced its first-ever relegation to the Second Division. Trophy success eluded them until 1957, marked by a memorable FA Cup victory over the Busby Babes. Aston Villa enriched their trophy cabinet in 1961 by clinching the inaugural League Cup.

Months earlier, a dispute with chairman Ron Bendall amid a league downturn led to Saunders' resignation.
