Horizon School History
The Horizon League is one of the most storied conferences in college sports, boasting some of the best teams and players to step onto a court or field. From its humble beginnings as an NCAA Division II conference in 1979, the Horizon League has become one of the top mid-major conferences in all collegiate athletics. With eight current members located throughout Indiana and Ohio, it's no wonder why so many fans flock to their respective schools for some thrilling action!
For decades, these teams have been competing at an incredibly high level on both men’s and women’s sides. The men's basketball program has produced numerous All-Americans, including former NBA greats like Steve Alford (Indiana) and Gary Payton (Oregon State). Other notable alumni include Xavier University star Tu Holloway, who led his team to two consecutive tournament appearances during his senior year; Butler Bulldogs coach Brad Stevens, who led them from near obscurity into national prominence with back-to-back Final Four trips; Oakland Golden Grizzlies center Keith Benson whose career ended with him being named Player Of The Year; And lastly Cleveland State guard Norris Cole whose clutch shooting helped lead CSU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance since 1986!
On the women’s side, there have been just as impressive accomplishments made by Horizon League programs, including Valparaiso University winning three regular season championships between 2009–12 while also making multiple WNIT appearances during that same span. Other noteworthy achievements include Green Bay Phoenix forward Julie Wojta becoming the only player from her school history to be named Player Of The Year twice, along with Detroit Mercy guard Shareta Brown setting a single-game scoring record when she dropped 47 points against IUPUI back in 2011!
Whether you are rooting for your alma mater or simply looking for something exciting on television any given night, chances are good that you will find it within this historic league, which continues to provide us all memorable moments each season we turn our attention towards them!
