Manchester City: How the City Football Group Upset Melbourne

Manchester City's parent organization, City Football Group (CFG), sparked plenty of debate when it announced the purchase of Melbourne Heart in 2014.

The group planned to create a network of football clubs that would enjoy financial stability and improved infrastructure and share in the ethos of the success already established at Man City.

However, many fans believe the newly-branded Melbourne City has become a shadow of its former self, and significant questions linger over the acquisition.

How Manchester City Linked up with Football in Melbourne

CFG’s acquisition of Melbourne Heart came on the back of a disastrous 2013/14 A-League season, which left them sitting at the foot of the table and in dire need of reinvention.

Fans initially thought it was a good move. CFG discussed a long-term strategy combining Melbourne's rich culture with its football and commercial expertise.

They realigned Melbourne Heart to follow their expansive global philosophy, replicating Man City’s style of play, infrastructure, and commercial success.

Melbourne Heart became Melbourne City. They adopted a light blue kit and logo and restructured the hierarchy. For some fans, the heart was immediately ripped out of the club.

Melbourne City are Poster Boys for Manufactured Success

The fans saw the identity of the club they love erased for CFG branding. The iconic red and white stripes were gone in favor of color supporters never identified with.

Campaigns such as ‘Keep the Red and White’ fell on deaf ears as CFG prioritized their overarching vision over local sentiment.

The team has enjoyed success on the pitch, finishing top of the regular season table for three successive seasons and being crowned Australian champions in 2020/21.

However, this has not made the club more culturally relevant than before CFG's arrival. Their A-League arch-rivals, Melbourne Victory, have a stronger fanbase and legacy.

Many people believe Melbourne City's success is manufactured, and the club lacks passion and connection with its fans - a pawn in CFG's plan to spread its wings across the globe.

Despite their big-name signings, their attendance is unimpressive, reinforcing the perceived belief that the club is disconnected from its fans. Older supporters are disillusioned, and the club is struggling to convince new ones to join the bandwagon.

This lack of connection with the football club has undoubtedly boosted other sports in the Melbourne region, notably horse racing.

Platforms that provide Sandown Park tips have had a significant uptick in traffic as Melbourne football fans have switched their attention elsewhere.

The odds of them returning to the fold look reasonably slim, given that the club appears set to remain under CFG’s control for the foreseeable future.

Melbourne Acquisition is Part of Man City’s Global Masterplan

Buying an Australian club was a good entry point into a new market for Man City. Further acquisitions in other nations have boosted the club’s global footprint.

Melbourne City is essentially a CFG base for scouting talent, marketing the Man City brand, and developing young players for the Premier League club.

CFG will argue they have made Melbourne City competitive and boosted Man City’s profile. From a business perspective, this is a win-win situation for them.

They did this without breaking the bank, as the A-League’s capped salary system ensures they must live within their means.

The decision to buy Melbourne Heart was not about football alone. It was part of a grand plan—one that has been largely successful.

CFG added another link to its empire and experimented with branding and development models in a controlled environment.

However, Melbourne City's story is different. Amid their on-field success and financial stability, they lost their identity and everything organic about them.

They were once a scrappy underdog with a boisterous fanbase, but they have become a corporate entity that is failing to find its place in the crowded Australian sports market.

CFG managed to add another feather to their crown, but at a cost that true Melbourne Heart fans continue to bear. Man City will care little for their plight as long as they thrive.
