Summit School History
The Summit League is one of the nation's most competitive collegiate athletic conferences. With teams from South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin competing for championships each year, it’s no surprise that The Summit League has a long and storied history of success.
Since its inception in 1982 as an NCAA Division II conference known as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities (AMCU), The Summit League has seen countless moments shaping college sports history. The league's teams have become synonymous with excellence over nearly four decades, from championship victories to individual accolades to record-breaking performances on both ends of the court or field.
One notable moment came back in 2006 when Oral Roberts University won their first-ever men's basketball tournament championship against Oakland University by a score of 75–64 at Sioux Falls Arena—a feat they would repeat just two years later with another victory over Western Illinois University by a score 82–72 at John Q Hammons Center in Tulsa Oklahoma. In addition to these accomplishments, ORU was awarded their first-ever automatic bid into March Madness after winning again during the 2011 season. This marked only the second time any school had achieved this accomplishment within the Summit League since Valparaiso did so five years prior.
Another critical moment came in 2017 when South Dakota State earned themselves a historic win against IUPUI, which not only gave them a regular season title but also made them the very first team from the summit league to receive an invitation to participate in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) where they went all way semifinals before being eliminated Duke Blue Devils who eventually became national champions following tournament conclusion! While SDSU ultimately fell short of achieving its ultimate goal, the fact remains that this still stands as a monumental achievement for entire conference recognition across the country!
Overall, many more success stories come out of Summit League throughout the past few decades — many of which continue to shape future generations of athletes today! Whether your fan favorite team like Oral Roberts Golden Eagles is taking home multiple titles or the Jackrabbits are making deep runs NIT — there will be plenty of exciting times ahead. Every fan follows along closely!
