Shortly after the NFL and AFL merged, the tradition that became Monday Night Football was born. Then NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle was looking to take advantage of the emerging popularity of football and shopped a prime-time Monday night package to the networks. ABC initially didn’t show much interest, but after Rozelle shopped his idea around to other networks, ABC agreed to televise a game every Monday night for the 1970 season.
