Wolverhampton Wanderers FC is one of the oldest teams in English football, having a history that spans nearly a century and a half. This team has seen it all, from periods of consecutive success to decades of decline and relegation. Come along as we explore the key moments that have defined this EPL club since its inception.
The birth of a golden club
In 1877, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC was born. It was initially called St Luke's FC but was changed to the current moniker in 1879. Wolves, their widespread nickname, was one of the twelve founding members of the Football League (currently the EFL). This would mark the beginning of their journey in competitive league football.
At the start, the club played its home games in Dudley Road, a football ground in Wolverhampton. In 1889, they moved to the Molineux Stadium, which has been their home base ever since. The Molineux was one of the first to install floodlights, under which many of the club's high-profile matches have been played.
The club's colors are black and gold and have a backstory. The colors originate from the city's motto, 'Out of Darkness Cometh Light,' with black representing the darkness and gold the light.
The golden eras of triumphs and trophies
The 1950s are generally recognized as their golden era. This was when they won three First Division titles: one in 1953-54, a second in 1957-58, and the third in the 1958-59 season. This hugely successful period in the club's history was led by former player Stan Cullis who became manager in 1948, while Billy Wright served as captain of the team at the time. Cullis, Wright, and other notable players from the era are considered the greatest Wolves legends.
Struggles following the Golden Era
The club experienced some success in the 70s, winning two Europa League Cups in 1974 and 1980. But it went downhill from there. They soon suffered relegation from the top flight. Two more consecutive relegations saw them end up in the fourth division, where they stayed for about 22 years. It wasn't until 2003 that they returned to the Premier League.
They were relegated a few more times but have been consistent in the top flight since the 2018/19 season. The best football betting sites, according to Cheekypunter, regularly provide top odds on all Wolves matches. So, club fans can start betting on the already released fixtures for the 2024/25 season.
Far from the most decorated English football club, Wolverhampton Wanderers are more about resilience and dedication to the sport. That’s what makes them true champions. They're also the only club to champion three different divisions.
