The Western Carolina Catamounts women’s basketball team currently competes in the Southern Conference. The Catamonts began play in 1965. The program grew from independent status to NAIAW, NCAA Division II, and then NCAA Division I. The Catamounts have appeared in two NCAA Tournaments. The team was the national CIAW runner-up in the 1968–69 season and finished fourth the following year in the tournament.
