In 1906, Eastern Kentucky University (then known as Eastern Kentucky State Normal School) fielded its first football team. The team was coached by W.O. Matthews and consisted of a group of young men who were eager to represent their school in athletic competition.
The team played its first game on October 12, 1906, against the Georgetown College Tigers. The game was played in Georgetown, Kentucky, and ended in a 6-6 tie. Despite the result, the Eastern Kentucky football team showed promise and enthusiasm, and continued to play games throughout the season against other schools in the region.
The 1906 football team was the first of many successful teams to come out of Eastern Kentucky University’s athletics program. The program has gone on to win numerous conference championships and national titles in various sports, and has produced many successful athletes and coaches over the years.
