In 2021: Inter Miami CF makes several changes in its second season, firing Alonso and hiring Phil Neville, a former Manchester United and England defender who had coached England’s women’s national team and was also a close friend of Beckham. The club also signs Ryan Shawcross, a former Stoke City captain; Gregore, a Brazilian defensive midfielder who joined from Bahia; and Blaise Matuidi, a former Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder who had also won the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France. The club also trades Pellegrini to Fort Lauderdale CF, its USL League One affiliate, after he was ruled ineligible as a designated player due to MLS salary cap rules. The club finishes ninth in the Eastern Conference and misses the playoffs in its second season. The club also participates in the Leagues Cup, a tournament between MLS and Liga MX teams, but loses to Santos Laguna of Mexico 3–0 in the quarterfinals.
