1895 - Sunderland Crowned World Championship

Under manager Tom Watson, Sunderland were crowned champions of England for the third time in four seasons in 1894–95. Having finished as runners-up the previous year, the Lads bounced back with an impressive run of just one defeat in their final 13 fixtures to reclaim the title. Sunderland topped the table with 47 points from 30 games, finishing five points clear of Everton in second place. The triumph was capped off in dramatic fashion when Sunderland traveled to Tynecastle Park in Edinburgh to face Scottish champions Heart of Midlothian in a “World Championship” match, winning 5–3 with a lineup made up entirely of Scottish players.
