In 1966, the UC Davis Aggies football team won their first Far Western Conference championship, finishing with a record of 7-2. Led by head coach Jim Sochor, the team featured a potent offense that scored 265 points in nine games, an average of nearly 30 points per game.
The Aggies started the season with a convincing 37-6 victory over Pacific, and went on to win their next five games against conference opponents. In the season finale, they defeated San Jose State 26-20 to clinch the championship.
Quarterback Rich Martini was the star of the team, passing for 1,271 yards and 13 touchdowns while also rushing for 329 yards and four more scores. He was named the Far Western Conference Player of the Year, and went on to have a successful career in the Canadian Football League.
The 1966 championship was the first of many for the UC Davis football program, which has gone on to win numerous conference and national titles over the years.
