Nickname
Marlins – The Miami Marlins have a unique and storied history, with their nickname having an exciting origin story. The team was founded in 1993 as the Florida Marlins but changed its name to the Miami Marlins when they moved into their new home at Marlins Park in 2012.
The original inspiration for the name came from Major League Baseball’s (MLB) first expansion franchise based out of South Florida: The Miami Miracle. This minor league team played during 1969-1971 and featured a logo that closely resembled what is now known as the iconic “Marlins” logo used by MLB today.
Miami Marlins Origin
After this initial spark of inspiration, former owner Wayne Huizenga wanted to make sure he chose something that would represent his hometown well; thus, he decided on “Marlins” due to its connection with both baseball and South Florida's abundance of saltwater fish species like sailfish, swordfish, and marlins! He also liked how it sounded similar to other popular sports nicknames such as "Dolphins" or "Panthers."
Today fans across all levels can be proud knowing that when they cheer for their beloved Fish (another common nickname), they do so under one rooted deeply within South Floridian culture - even if many don't know exactly where it originated!

The Miami Marlins History began in 1993 when the franchise entered Major League Baseball as the Florida Marlins. Founded by Wayne Huizenga, the team instantly brought professional baseball back to South Florida. In 2012, the club officially became the Miami Marlins, adopting a new name, logo, and stadium to represent the city while remaining an important part of Miami Marlins Baseball.
From their earliest days, the Florida Marlins played home games at Joe Robbie Stadium, later renamed Pro Player Park and eventually Hard Rock Stadium. Their first regular season game took place on April 5, 1993, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Orestes Destrade hit the first home run in franchise history, marking a milestone in Miami Marlins History and creating excitement for fans eager to embrace their new team.
The franchise quickly achieved success. In 1997, under manager Jim Leyland, the Marlins captured a wild card spot with a 92–70 record. They went on to win their first World Series title that year, defeating the Cleveland Indians in a thrilling seven-game series.
