Arthur C. “Dutch” Lonborg was one of the most respected coaches and basketball administrators of the 20th century. In 1925, he achieved national fame by leading a small Washburn College team to an AAU National Championship, a remarkable feat against heavily favored and much larger competition. After leaving the sidelines, his tenure as the Kansas Athletic Director and NCAA Tournament Chair cemented his legacy as a master organizer.
Beyond coaching, he made a lasting impact as athletic director at Kansas and as chairman of the NCAA Tournament Committee, where he helped expand the NCAA Tournament from eight teams to 25 teams. He also served as manager of the 1960 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team that won the gold medal. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1973.
