1936 - Carter Leads Sixth Title Triumph

Sunderland emerged as First Division champions in the 1935–36 season with 56 points from 42 matches, securing the title on 13 April 1936 with a 7–2 victory over Birmingham City. The triumph was captained by 22-year-old local hero Raich Carter, who became the youngest captain to win the Football League First Division title, with Carter and Bobby Gurney each netting 31 goals to lead the attack. The Lads then suffered just three defeats in 21 matches and cemented their place at the top of the league, a place they stayed from November right through to their final game of the season.
