History of the ASUN Conference

The ASUN Conference is a prominent NCAA Division I college athletic conference established in 1978. Originally called the Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC), it began with seven founding schools: Georgia State University, Florida International University, Jacksonville University, Mercer University, Stetson University, Troy State College, and Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1992, it changed its name to the Atlantic Sun Conference, now known as the ASUN Conference, and expanded to include eight additional institutions.

Over the years, the ASUN Conference has developed into one of the most competitive leagues in collegiate sports. Many of the ASUN Conference teams have become household names for their outstanding achievements. Programs like the FGCU Eagles men’s basketball team gained national recognition with their memorable “Dunk City” run during the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Other schools, including Liberty University, Lipscomb, and Jacksonville, have built intense rivalries that fuel thrilling matchups season after season.

The history of the ASUN Conference teams stretches even further back than the league’s formation. Several schools competed against each other decades before joining under one banner. For instance, Stetson University and Mercer University faced each other as rivals since the 1950s, adding extra meaning to their matchups within the conference today. This deep history creates added excitement for fans and players alike every time the ASUN Conference Tournament arrives.

Today, the annual ASUN Conference Tournament stands as a showcase of the league’s best athletic talent. Whether it’s basketball, baseball, soccer, or volleyball, the tournament provides opportunities for ASUN Conference teams to secure NCAA postseason berths and highlight their programs on a national stage. Each event delivers intense competition and memorable moments that cement the ASUN as one of the premier mid-major conferences in the country.
