West Georgia Wolves Origin
The 'Wolves' nickname is deeply rooted in our team's history. The University of West Georgia was initially known as the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School when it was founded in 1906. It then became West Georgia College in 1933. The sports teams were known as the 'Braves' until the late 1980s. However, in 1989, a new era dawned, and the college became a university. With this transition, the need for a mascot that could symbolize the strength, resilience, and unity of the university community became evident.
The choice of the 'Wolves' as the nickname was a collective decision, reflecting the democratic values of the university. The students, faculty, staff, and alumni were all involved in the selection process. The 'Wolf' was chosen because it symbolizes teamwork, intelligence, and adaptability. These are qualities that we, as a university and a sports community, strive to embody.
Today, the 'Wolves' nickname is more than just a moniker for our sports teams. It's a symbol of our collective spirit, our fierce determination, and our commitment to excellence. As a Wolves fan, the nickname serves as a constant reminder of our team's strength and unity, fueling our passion and loyalty. It's a source of immense pride and identity, driving us to howl in support of our teams, embodying the spirit of the wolf pack.
