Nickname
Big Green - The Dartmouth Big Green is one of the most iconic nicknames in college sports. It evokes images of a proud and successful athletic program, but many fans may not be aware of where it came from or how it became associated with Dartmouth College. The origin story behind the nickname dates back to 1866 when students at the school began referring to themselves as “Big Green” due to their green uniforms.
At first, this was just an informal term used by students and alumni. Still, eventually, it grew into something much more significant when sportswriters started using “Big Green” to refer collectively to all teams representing Dartmouth College in sporting events. This included football, basketball, baseball, and other sports that were part of NCAA competitions throughout New England during this time.
As more people heard about these teams being referred to as “Big Green,” they began associating them with success on the field, too, so much so that by 1923 official merchandise featuring logos for various Big Green teams started appearing in stores across America! From there on out, any team representing Dartmouth College has been known colloquially (and officially) as "Dartmouth BigGreen."
Today if you attend a game wearing anything bearing those words, you will be instantly recognized among your fellow fans – no matter what sport or competition is taking place! So next time someone asks why they are called "Dartmouth BigGreen," you know: over 150 years ago, some clever student thought up an excellent name for his university's athletic squads, which has since become synonymous with excellence both on-and-off field!

History of the Big Green
Dartmouth College has a long and storied history of athletics, with its Big Green sports teams competing in NCAA Division I since the early 20th century. The college's athletic programs have seen great success, winning numerous conference championships and producing some of the most talented athletes in collegiate sports. For fans of Dartmouth Big Green sports teams, there is much to celebrate about their team’s accomplishments and what lies ahead for them this season.
Dartmouth's men’s basketball program dates back to 1904 when they joined the Ivy League Conference (now known as Ivy League). Since then, they have won several conference titles, including two outright titles in 1954-55 and 1956-57, while making multiple appearances in post-season tournaments such as NIT or NCAA tournament play-in games. The women's basketball program was established more recently but has already achieved remarkable success under head coach Belle Koclanes who led her team to three consecutive regular season championship titles from 2011–2014 before stepping down after that year due to health reasons.
In addition to basketball, other varsity sports programs at Dartmouth include football which began playing competitively in 1881; hockey which started with an exhibition game against Harvard University way back on March 14th, 1903; baseball dating all way back from 1893; lacrosse beginning officially during spring 1913 among others like soccer, softball, etc. All these sports programs are part of the “Big Green" family, where students compete for glory within their school and across other universities.
With a rich tradition spanning generations, it is no surprise that many alumni become professional athletes or coaches. Some notable names include NFL Hall-of–Famer Jeff Kemp; NBA player Matt Bonner; NHL players Lee Stempniak & Grant Lewis; MLB player Mike Remlinger, to name a few examples among hundreds out there! So if you're looking forward to following up with your favorite former student-athlete who turned pro, look no further than here! Go, Big Green!!
