Nickname
Leathernecks - The Western Illinois Leathernecks is a college athletics program that has been around for over 100 years. The team's nickname, the Leathernecks, originates from its affiliation with the United States Marine Corps. As part of their commitment to service in World War I and II, many students at Western Illinois University joined the Marines and served bravely in battle.
In recognition of these brave men and women who sacrificed so much for our country, WIU adopted "Leatherneck" as an official nickname in 1927 - making them one of only two NCAA schools to do so (the other being VMI). In addition to this strong connection between WIU Athletics and military service members, it also serves as a reminder that sports can bring people together regardless of background or beliefs.
Today when you attend any sporting event involving the Leathernecks, you will see fans proudly wearing leather jackets adorned with patches featuring symbols such as an eagle clutching a globe surrounded by stars – all representing patriotism & courage on behalf of those who serve our country daily! Whether cheering on their football team or watching basketball games at home court, no matter what sport they are playing - each fan knows they are honoring those courageous individuals who have fought hard for freedom throughout history!

History of the Leathernecks
The Western Illinois Leathernecks have a proud history of excellence in NCAA sports. Founded in 1899, the school has long been a powerhouse on the college athletics stage and is home to some of the most successful teams in all divisions. WIU has consistently competed at an elite level since its inception, earning numerous conference championships and producing countless All-Americans.
In recent years, Western Illinois' football program has become one of its crown jewels; since 2000 alone, they have won three outright Missouri Valley Football Conference titles (2004–2006) and shared another two (2012 & 2014). The team's success was rewarded with an invitation to join Division I FCS play beginning with the 2017 season – something that had eluded them for decades prior! In addition to their gridiron accomplishments, WIU also boasts vital programs across multiple other sports, including basketball (where they've made five consecutive postseason appearances), baseball (which captured back-to-back Summit League Championships from 2009–2010), and soccer which qualified for seven straight NCAA tournaments between 2004–2011).
Though it may not be considered one of America's top collegiate athletic powerhouses just yet – there’s no denying that Western Illinois University is quickly becoming one! With such impressive feats already under their belt, it will be exciting to see what this storied institution can accomplish next - both on and off the field. So if you're looking for a great example of how hard work pays off, look no further than your Leathernecks!
