Nickname
Seahawks - The Wagner Seahawks have been a part of the NCAA Division I since the late 1980s, and their nickname has become synonymous with college athletics. The origins of this unique name are rooted in both history and geography.
First, let’s look at the geographical influence on their moniker. The school is located near Staten Island, New York – an area known for its seagull population. It was only natural then that they would represent themselves as “Seahawks” when it came time to pick out a mascot or team name!
Now we can dive into some historical context behind why they chose this particular animal as their symbol: During World War II, many members of Wagner College served in the United States Navy's Sea Hawk squadron – which flew off aircraft carriers during missions over Japan and other areas in Southeast Asia. This connection between service personnel from Wagner College and these brave pilots gave rise to what eventually became known as “Wagner Seahawks."
Today, fans across all levels show tremendous pride for this special name derived from such rich history; whether you're watching them play football or basketball at home games or rooting them on during away contests - you can be sure there will be plenty of cheers echoing throughout each stadium whenever someone yells out "Go Hawks!"

History of the Seahawks
The Wagner Seahawks are one of the most storied teams in college sports. With a rich history from 1925, the team has seen some incredible successes. From winning multiple national championships and conference titles to producing numerous All-Americans, there is no shortage of reasons why fans should be proud of this institution's past accomplishments.
Since its inception in 1925, Wagner College has had a long and successful run as an NCAA Division I program. The team won their first National Championship title in 1963 under legendary head coach Al Davis and went on to win seven more during his tenure with them from 1961 to 1971. In addition to those impressive accolades, they earned two NIT tournament appearances (1974 & 1975) during this period and three conference titles (1963–64; 1965–66; 1970).
During their time at Division I level play, the Seahawks have produced several notable athletes, such as NBA Hall Of Famer Earl Monroe, who played for them from 1964 until 1967 before becoming one of basketball’s all-time greats with both Baltimore Bullets/Washington Wizards franchises. Other former players include current NBA player Kyle O'Quinn, who was drafted by Orlando Magic in 2012 after playing four seasons at Wagner College, where he was named NEC Player Of The Year twice while leading his squad into post-season tournaments each year he attended school there. Additionally, other notables like Darryl Dawkins, John Starks, Mark Jackson & Kenny Anderson played for or were associated with Wagners' men’s basketball program before becoming professional stars.
Over recent years, though, it hasn't been only about Basketball or football that have brought success either - As recently, 2019 saw both men's soccer teams reach unprecedented heights when they became NEC regular season champions alongside making it into the NCAA Tournament round 32 stage, respectively! This feat alone showed how far these programs come from the beginning to now - A true testament to the hard work put forth by coaches, staff, and students throughout the process!
