Nickname
Lancers - The Cal Baptist Lancers are an NCAA Division I college sports team in Riverside, California. The school is a member of the Western Athletic Conference and competes in various sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, and more. While many may not know the origins of their nickname “Lancers,” it has quite a unique history.
1961 when Cal Baptist was founded as California Baptist College, they adopted the mascot known as "the lancer." This choice came from two sources: firstly, medieval knights used lances to joust against one another, which symbolized courage and strength; secondly that an old English said, “lance-er's doit,” which means ‘doers get things done’ – something that resonated with students at CBC who wanted to be active members of society rather than passive observers.
Over time this name stuck with them even after becoming part of NCAA Division I athletics in 2020 - though some slight changes have been made, such as replacing their original mascot design (a knight) with a more modern look (a person wearing blue & white). Regardless what remains unchanged is how proud all those associated with CBU feel about being called 'Lancers' - whether playing on the court or cheering from the sidelines!

History of the Lancers
The Cal Baptist Lancers have a long and storied history of NCAA sports excellence. From their first year in Division II play in the early 1980s to their current status as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, this California-based university has always been at the forefront of college athletics.
In its inaugural season, Cal Baptist's men’s basketball program made an immediate impact by winning both regular season and tournament championships. The team made four consecutive appearances in the Division II National Championship game from 1984-1987, ultimately claiming two national titles (1984 & 1986). Since then, they've earned numerous conference championships across multiple sports, including baseball (5), softball (3), and women's volleyball (2).
In addition to success on the field/court/mat, several coaches who started with CBU have found success elsewhere. Five former head coaches are leading programs at major universities, such as USC Trojans' Clay Helton and Arizona Wildcats' Sean Miller—both former CBU staff members! This speaks volumes about how much potential is within these walls for those looking for opportunities beyond just playing collegiate sports; it also shows how well-respected this university is when it comes to producing quality athletes and coaches alike.
Overall there’s no doubt that Cal Baptist Lancers are one of the best teams around when it comes to NCAA competition – regardless if you're talking about past successes or present-day accomplishments! Their commitment to providing student-athletes with top-notch facilities and talented coaching staff makes them formidable opponents each time they step onto any playing surface, making them a must-watch team for all true fans who appreciate great sportsmanship mixed with intense competition!
