North Carolina Central Eagles History
The North Carolina Central Eagles have built a remarkable legacy that spans more than a century, especially known for their fierce rivalry with the South Carolina State Bulldogs. Founded in Durham, North Carolina, in 1910, the university quickly became recognized for its strong athletic tradition. Competing in multiple sports, including North Carolina Central Eagles football and North Carolina Central Eagles basketball, the program has consistently emphasized athletic excellence and academic growth.
The North Carolina Central Eagles football program achieved one of its greatest milestones in 1989 when it captured the NCAA Division II National Championship. Under the leadership of head coach Rod Broadway (not Alonzo “Jake” Gaither, who coached elsewhere), the Eagles completed a perfect 12-0 season. This championship run brought national recognition to the program and firmly established the North Carolina Central Eagles as one of the top teams in the nation. Over the years, their football team has continued to produce NFL-caliber athletes and dominate the MEAC, adding multiple conference titles to their name.
The North Carolina Central Eagles basketball program has also been a major source of pride for the university. Known for its fast-paced style and disciplined play, the team has achieved numerous winning seasons and conference championships. In 2014, the Eagles made history by securing their first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance after defeating top-seeded teams in the MEAC Tournament.
