The team was founded in 1979 and has been an integral part of the local sports scene ever since. But many people don’t know that the nickname “Trailblazers” originates from the history of early settlers to this area.
Utah Tech Trailblazers Origin
In 1847, Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young set out from Illinois to find religious freedom and settle in what would become known as Salt Lake City, Utah. These brave men and women faced incredible odds along their journey. Still, they persevered with courage and determination - blazing trails across deserts, mountains, riversides - anything standing between them and their goal of finding a new home where they could practice their faith without fear or persecution. This spirit of exploration lives on today through the name “Utah Tech Trailblazers,” which pays homage to these original explorers who made great sacrifices for our state's future generations!
Today, we can look back at those first settlers with admiration; not only did they open up a brand new land full of opportunities, but they also provided us with an inspiring example that still resonates today: No matter how difficult things may seem, never give up – keep pushing forward no matter what stands before you! Utah Tech Trailblazers History
The Utah Tech Trailblazers have been an important part of college athletics since their founding in 1967. Known for their strong rivalry with the Utah Valley Wolverines, the Utah Tech Trailblazers football and Utah Tech Trailblazers basketball programs have helped shape the university’s athletic identity. Over the decades, the Trailblazers have earned recognition for their dedication, skill, and growing legacy in NCAA competition.
The Utah Tech Trailblazers basketball team first gained national attention during the 1970–71 season when they captured both the regular season and tournament championships in their conference, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen in March Madness. Their early success helped establish the Trailblazers as a respected name in college basketball. Through the years, Utah Tech returned to the NCAA Tournament several times, including Elite Eight appearances in 1978 and 1984 and additional Sweet Sixteen runs in 1973, 1975, and 1983. In total, they’ve appeared nine times in the tournament — a remarkable achievement for a growing Division I basketball program.
The Utah Tech Trailblazers football program has also achieved great success. Under legendary head coach Lou Holtz Jr., the Trailblazers captured four consecutive conference championships from 1994 to 1997, cementing their status as one of the most consistent teams in their league. Their commitment to strong play, discipline, and teamwork has kept them competitive year after year.

Beyond football and basketball, Utah Tech has built a reputation for excellence across multiple sports. The women’s soccer team dominated their league between 2003 and 2008, winning six straight titles, while the volleyball program went undefeated in 2006, bringing home another championship.
