Knights - Today, we will dive into the origins of the nickname "Knights" for our beloved Fairleigh Dickinson University sports teams. As many of you may know, the FDU Knights have a long-standing tradition of excellence in athletics, and the name itself holds a special significance to our university.
The history of the Knights dates back to the 1960s when Fairleigh Dickinson University was still known as Fairleigh Dickinson University – Rutherford Campus. At the time, the university sought to establish a new identity for its athletic teams. After much consideration, the name "Knights" was chosen to represent the university's honor, courage, and chivalry values.
But where did the inspiration for the nickname come from? Some speculate that it was a nod to the university's founder, Colonel Fairleigh S. Dickinson, a World War I veteran with a strong sense of honor and duty. Others believe it was a tribute to the university's location in New Jersey, known as the "Garden State," and its proximity to New York City, known as the "Empire State." Both of these titles have a strong connection to the medieval era, where knights were seen as noble protectors of the land.
The FDU Knights logo also holds a special meaning. The knight's helmet, shield, and sword symbolize our athletes' bravery, strength, and determination. The colors, green and white, are a nod to the university's school colors and represent the balance between tradition and innovation that FDU strives for.
Over the years, the Knights have become synonymous with athletic success and excellence. Our teams have won numerous conference championships, and our student-athletes have gone on to achieve great things both on and off the field. The name "Knights" has become a source of pride and motivation for our athletes and continues inspiring them to strive for greatness.
But the Knights nickname is not just reserved for our sports teams. It also represents the entire FDU community, including our students, faculty, and alumni. We are all knights in our way, upholding the values of honor, courage, and chivalry in everything we do.
