Nickname
Panthers - The Prairie View A&M Panthers are proud member of the NCAA and have been since their inception in 1924. The university has long been known as an academic powerhouse, but they also boast impressive athletic accomplishments. But many people don't know that the Panthers' nickname has an interesting origin story.
At one point during its early years, Prairie View A&M was home to many panthers roaming around campus grounds due to its proximity to nearby forests and woodlands, where these majestic animals lived naturally in abundance at the time. This inspired then-President Dr. William Hazzard, who thought it would be fitting for his school's sports teams to take on this name as a way of honoring their unique connection with nature while also paying homage to all that Panther symbolized - strength, courage, and resilience among other things!
Today, students at PVAMU proudly carry on this tradition by wearing black & gold uniforms adorned with images of panthers whenever they compete against other schools or participate in any sporting event or competition - reminding everyone else just how powerful those animals were back when they roamed freely across Texas' wild landscapes so many decades ago! So if you ever find yourself cheering on your favorite team from PVAMU, remember why exactly their mascot is called "Panther" – because there’s more than meets the eye regarding understanding our school's history & culture!
