Nickname
Tribe - As a dedicated fan of the William & Mary Tribe, you may have wondered about the origins of our beloved team's nickname. While it may seem like a simple name, the history behind it is pretty exciting and reflects the values and traditions of our university.
The William & Mary Tribe nickname has been in use for over a century, and its roots can be traced back to the early days of the university. The term "Tribe" was first used in 1916 by the William & Mary student newspaper editor, The Flat Hat. The editor, J. Randolph Ruffin, sincerely appreciated the Native American culture and believed that the term "Tribe" accurately represented the unity and camaraderie of the students and faculty at the university.
But the question remains: why did Ruffin choose the term "Tribe" specifically? The answer lies in the history of the university itself. William & Mary was founded in 1693 and is the second oldest institution of higher education in the United States. During its early years, the university was heavily influenced by the Native American tribes of the Powhatan Confederacy, who inhabited the land where the university was built.
The Powhatan Confederacy was made up of several tribes, including the Pamunkey, Mattaponi, and Chickahominy, who all played a significant role in the development of the university. The university's first president, Reverend James Blair, had a close relationship with the Pamunkey tribe and even established a school for Native American children on campus. This connection to the Native American tribes is a significant part of William & Mary's history and is reflected in the choice of the "Tribe" nickname.
In addition to honoring the university's history, the "Tribe" nickname also embodies the values and traditions of William & Mary. "Tribe" represents a strong sense of community and togetherness, a cornerstone of the university's culture. It also reflects our student-athletes competitive spirit and determination, who proudly represent the Tribe on and off the field.
Over the years, the William & Mary Tribe nickname has become synonymous with excellence and embraced by the entire university community. It has also evolved to include the iconic green and gold feathers logo, which nods to the Native American headdress and further honors the university's history and heritage.
