Nickname
Terriers - As a die-hard fan of the Wofford Terriers, I'm always thrilled to share the unique origins of our beloved team's nickname. The backstory is as charming and engaging as our team's performance on the field, adding a layer of richness to our shared fan experience.
Wofford Terriers Origin
The Wofford Terriers got their name from a breed of dog known for its tenacity and spirit. Terriers are small yet fearless dogs known for their energetic and determined nature. They are often used in hunting, showcasing their bravery by facing opponents much more significant than themselves. These traits have been symbolic for our team and the Wofford community, underlining our commitment to fearlessly face any challenge, no matter the odds.
In 1972, when the college was looking for a mascot, a Boston Terrier named "Boss" was chosen to represent our school spirit. The Boston Terrier, a breed well-known for its intelligence, friendliness, and adaptability, resonated well with the qualities that Wofford wished to project. Boss became an instant hit with the students and the community; thus, our team became known as the Wofford Terriers.
Today, as a Terriers fan, I feel an immense sense of pride in our nickname. It's more than just a moniker; it symbolizes our resilience, determination, and spirit. Every time our athletes step onto the field, they embody the same tenacity and fearlessness that the Terrier breed represents. It's a constant reminder that no matter the size of the challenge, we, the Wofford Terriers, face it with courage and determination.
