Nickname
Austin FC – As Austin FC prepares to kick off its inaugural season in Major League Soccer, soccer fans across the city eagerly await the announcement of their team’s official nickname. While there has been much speculation and debate over what precisely this name will be, one thing is sure: it will deeply connect to Austin’s unique culture and history.
The process for selecting an appropriate nickname began with a survey conducted by Austin FC last year that asked residents about potential names they would like to see associated with their club. The results were then narrowed down by a committee comprised of members from both within and outside of MLS who sought input from various stakeholders, including sponsors, media outlets, supporter groups, and more. After months of deliberation, the final decision was made based on several factors such as availability (in terms of trademarks), originality (to avoid confusion with other teams) as well as cultural relevance (so that it truly reflects the spirit of Austinite).
It's clear that when choosing an identity for their new club in MLS, AustinFC wanted something special – something which speaks directly to all those passionate about soccer in Texas' capital city. With so many possibilities available, it can be challenging to decide on just one! However, if recent reports are anything go by, we could soon find out what exactly this long-awaited moniker will be. Until then, we'll have to wait until further news emerges regarding this exciting development!

History of the Austin FC
Austin FC is the newest Major League Soccer (MLS) team to join the league, debuting in 2021. Anthony Precourt founded the team, which has been a long-time dream since he purchased Columbus Crew SC in 2013. Austin FC is based in Austin, Texas, and plays its home games at Q2 Stadium near downtown Austin.
The history behind this new MLS club dates back to October 2018 when it was announced that Precourt Sports Ventures had agreed with the City of Austin for a stadium deal on city-owned land adjacent to McKalla Place in North Austin. This agreement allowed for PSV’s development group—which included local investors such as Eddie Margaines Jr., David Adelman, Bryan Sheffield, and Alan Hartman—to build what would become known as Q2 Stadium, an impressive facility that seats 20,500 fans with plans for future expansion up to 30,000 seats if needed down the road.
In January 2019, it was officially announced that MLS had granted Anthony Precourt's bid for an expansion franchise called “Austin Football Club,” making them only one of two teams from Texas alongside Houston Dynamo, who have been part of MLS since 2006. Since then, the club has launched its badge design and jersey kits and signed several high-profile players, including former USMNT star Brad Guzan. As we move closer to kickoff time later this year, the excitement continues building around town about what will surely be one historic season ahead!
