Big South Conference History
The Big South Conference has built a notable legacy in NCAA athletics since its formation in 1983. It unites competitive programs from several states, and this page covers both the conference’s evolution and the histories of Big South teams and Big South schools that have shaped it. Over the decades, the Big South has expanded, added sports, and elevated its national presence.
Charter members included Augusta, Charleston Southern (then Baptist College), Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Radford, Winthrop, and Armstrong State. Soon afterward, UNC Asheville joined, giving the Big South enough institutions to meet NCAA requirements. The conference’s first competitive season began in fall 1984, and by 1986 it gained full Division I status.
Expansion and membership changes have been a constant. The Big South later added Liberty, Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, Longwood, High Point, and others. Some schools departed over time—like Coastal Carolina, which left in 2016—but the conference has remained resilient.
In 2002, the Big South began sponsoring football, linking many Big South schools under one roof for all major sports. That move strengthened the conference’s footprint in collegiate athletics and allowed member schools’ football programs to compete inter-conference.
Over time, Big South teams have also broken ground in other sports. For example, Coastal Carolina’s 2016 College World Series victory was the first national championship in Big South history. Many Big South schools have also produced All-Americans, Academic Award winners, and strong postseason showings across basketball, baseball, soccer, and more.
Achievements & Legacy
The Big South Conference has distinguished itself through both athletic and academic success. Under longtime commissioner Kyle Kallander, the league expanded its sport offerings, strengthened media exposure, and improved student-athlete performance measures. The Big South also created a Hall of Fame (starting 2003–04), inducting standout contributors and athletes from its Big South schools.
Conference members have succeeded in national tournaments, led by Coastal Carolina’s NCAA baseball title, multiple NCAA basketball appearances by Big South teams, and frequent postseason berths in football. Big South schools continue to win conference championships and elevate the conference’s profile in the NCAA landscape.
Today, the Big South Conference stands as a respected league of Big South schools, home to competitive Big South teams across many sports. Its history is rich with growth, adaptation, and standout moments—and the stories of each member school form the foundation of its continuing legacy.
