Nickname
The Sky Blues
Coventry City picked up its well-known nickname, "The Sky Blues," in the early 1960s as part of a deliberate rebrand by manager Jimmy Hill. After taking charge in 1961, Hill kicked off a "Sky Blue revolution" that included switching the club's kit to an all sky blue strip for the 1962–63 season, making Coventry the first English team to wear matching shirts and shorts in a single colour. The bold new look came with a new nickname too, as fans and the local press began calling the team the Sky Blues, replacing an earlier, less popular nickname, "The Bantams." The name fit the club's fresh look perfectly and has stuck ever since.

Coventry City FC History
Coventry City Football Club began life in 1883 as Singers F.C., formed by workers at the Singer cycle firm. The club changed its name to Coventry City in 1898 and spent its early decades bouncing around regional leagues before joining the Football League in 1919. The Coventry City history through this period was shaped by financial struggles and relegation battles as the club worked to find its footing.
Everything changed with the arrival of Jimmy Hill in 1961. Alongside chairman Derrick Robins, Hill turned the club around, winning the Third Division title in 1964 and the Second Division title in 1967 to reach the top flight of English football for the first time. Coventry went on to spend 34 consecutive seasons in the top division, becoming founding members of the Premier League in 1992 and reaching their highest-ever league finish of sixth place back in 1970.
Forest FC Achievements
The most celebrated moment in Coventry City history came in 1987, when the Sky Blues won the FA Cup, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3–2 in a final still remembered as one of the competition's classic matches. It remains the club's only major trophy to date, with Keith Houchen's diving header standing as one of the most replayed goals in FA Cup history. Coventry also reached League Cup semi-finals in 1981 and 1990, adding to a run of near misses that kept the club firmly in the conversation among England's top sides.
Following relegation from the Premier League in 2001, Coventry City history entered a tougher period, with the club dropping through the divisions and facing serious financial trouble, including a period in administration. Through it all, the loyalty of Sky Blues supporters kept the club moving forward. In more recent years, Coventry has rebuilt steadily, reaching the Championship play-off final in 2023 and continuing to push for a return to the top flight.
Across more than 140 years, Coventry City FC has built its story on reinvention as much as results — from a bicycle-factory works team to Wembley cup winners to a club fighting its way back up the leagues. Today, the Sky Blues carry that same spirit into every new season, with fans still hoping for a second shot at major silverware.
