Bill Russell was the ultimate winner in the history of North American professional sports and the defensive anchor of the greatest dynasty in NBA history. A 6'10" center with peerless shot-blocking instincts and a genius-level basketball IQ, Russell transformed the game by proving that a team could be built entirely around defense and rebounding. In his 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics, he led the team to an astronomical 11 NBA Championships, including a record eight in a row.

His rivalry with Wilt Chamberlain defined the era, a classic battle of Russell’s team-first winning philosophy against Chamberlain’s individual statistical dominance. Off the court, Russell was a towering figure in the Civil Rights Movement and became the first Black head coach in the history of major U.S. professional sports. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 1975 and again as a coach in 2021.
