NFL records fall each season. The 2025 campaign is going to be no different.
Even though it is already underway, there remains plenty of time left for historical feats. We are not just talking about single-game milestones, either. Career-long touchstones are bound to be reset. That is what we have come to expect from a league with a rulebook that heavily favors offenses these days.
The most plugged-in football fans may be able to guess some of the records that could be up for grabs. No one will come close to forecasting all of them. Many step out on a limb. If their odds were available on the best football betting sites, they would be absurdly long.
But that’s part of the fun. We do not just want to play it safe. We want to be all over the place—within reason.
So without further ado, here are a handful of NFL records that could be broken by the end of the 2025 regular season.
Honorable Mention: Fastest Player to 250 Passing Touchdowns
Previous Record-Holder: Aaron Rodgers
New Record-Holder: Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs
Aaron Rodgers reached 250 passing touchdowns faster than any other quarterback in NFL history. He cleared the 2.5-century mark in just 121 games—fewer than eight full seasons’ worth of games. From the moment he set it, people started wondering who would be the signal-caller to come along and challenge it.
Enter Patrick Mahomes.
Some posited it might take him longer than the 121 games to reach 250 passing TDs. The Chiefs' offense has become a source of uncertainty since last season. And so far, it has not exactly quieted the concern.
It ended up not mattering. Mahomes cleared the 250 threshold during Game No. 116 of his career. The question now becomes: Who, if anyone, will be the next player to get here faster than him?
Most Receptions in a Season
Current Record-Holder: Michael Thomas (149)
Potential Challenger: Puka Nacua of the Los Angeles Rams
Raise your hand if you saw this coming. If you have one in the air, please share the winning lottery numbers with the rest of it.
Back in 2019, Michael Thomas reeled in 149 catches with the New Orleans Saints. Though a couple of wideouts have come close to reaching the mountaintop, nobody has cleared it. Yet.
Entering the season, Oliver Connolly of The Guardian thought Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals could get to 150 receptions. Here is his justification:
“Chase is next in line. If the Cincinnati defense is as porous as projected, the Bengals will rely on their passing attack to keep them in games. That’s bad news for the win-loss column, but good news for Chase and his co-star Tee Higgins. The duo combined for 200 receptions and 2,619 yards last season, the highest total of any tandem in the league. The Bengals will need a repeat. Only four duos in NFL history have crossed 3,000 yards combined. [Joe] Burrow has enough auxiliary weapons to share the love, but Chase and Higgins will still receive the highest dose of targets.”
While this is sound reasoning, it has already fallen apart. Joe Burrow is battling a turf toe injury that prompted the Bengals to trade for Joe Flacco. Chase is officially off the board.
Puka Nacua, on the other hand, is a different story. He has recorded double-digit receptions in all but one of his games. And while he recently suffered an injury, he returned to the Rams’ game against the Baltimore Ravens.
At this writing, Nacua is on pace for more than 170 receptions. That gives him the chance to break Thomas’ record even if you account for the bump he gets from a 17-game schedule.
Most Consecutive 1,000-Yard Receiving Seasons to Start a Career
Current Record-Holder: Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Potential Challenger: …Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Okay, stick with us for a second. Mike Evans has cleared 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 11 NFL seasons, which is something no one else has ever done before. Now, Jerry Rice turned in 14 straight 1,000-yard seasons, because he’s the goat. But his streak did not begin until his second season.
If Evans clears 1,000 yards again, he will effectively break the record he’s already broken. It will also give him an outside chance of matching or exceeding Rice’s 14-straight-1,000-yard-season streak.
Most assumed Evans would cross the threshold, again, without much of a sweat. So much for that.
A hamstring injury has limited the starting wideout to just three games and a total of 140 yards. That’s not going to be good enough to hit the milestone.
Still, Evans is usually good for a bunch of 80-plus-yard games every year. If he can return with 10 games left on the Bucs’ schedule, he’ll have a chance at breaking his own record.
Longest NFL Playoff Streak
Current Record-Holder: New England Patriots (11)
Potential Challenger: Kansas City Chiefs (10)
All right, this #RecordWatch amounts to a tie. But it would be a preamble to setting NFL history next season.
The Kansas City Chiefs have earned a playoff appearance in each of the past 10 seasons. If they get to 11, they will tie the New England Patriots for the longest postseason streak of all time.
This selection ultimately cuts because the Chiefs are making it more interesting than expected. Everyone had them penciled in for another playoff cameo this year. But through the first six weeks of the season, they sit in third place inside their own division.
Patrick Mahomes and company have earned the benefit of the doubt. However, many of last year’s offensive concerns remain, and the defense has not been nearly as lights out as expected.
Grab your popcorn. This one could go down to the wire.
