Summit League History

The Summit League history stands as a remarkable chapter in NCAA athletics, filled with achievements, rivalries, and growth among leading Summit League teams. Originally founded in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities (AMCU), it began as an NCAA Division II conference before transitioning to Division I status. Over the decades, the league has showcased the strength and talent of many great Summit schools across the Midwest.

The Summit League teams represent institutions from South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin. These schools have developed a competitive culture defined by excellence, sportsmanship, and determination. Throughout Summit League history, the conference has produced championship-caliber athletes, record-setting performances, and memorable postseason runs across basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track and field.

A defining moment in Summit League history came in 2006, when Oral Roberts University won its first men’s basketball tournament championship against Oakland University at the Sioux Falls Arena. The Golden Eagles repeated this success in 2008 and later secured an automatic NCAA Tournament berth in 2011—becoming one of the most dominant programs among all Summit schools.

League Achievements

Another highlight came in 2017, when South Dakota State University claimed the regular season title and became the first Summit League team to receive an NIT invitation. The Jackrabbits advanced to the semifinals, earning national recognition for both the school and the conference. Their success marked a major milestone in Summit League history, proving that Summit schools can compete with powerhouse programs nationwide.

In recent years, Summit League teams like North Dakota State and South Dakota State have continued to thrive in NCAA basketball, while Denver and Omaha have achieved strong performances in other sports. The conference remains committed to growing athletic excellence and academic achievement across all Summit schools, shaping a legacy that inspires the next generation of student-athletes.

With every season, the Summit League history continues to expand, driven by passionate players, dedicated coaches, and loyal fans. The future of Summit League teams looks brighter than ever as they strive for new records, titles, and unforgettable moments in collegiate sports.
