2015 - Buffalo Bulls win their first MAC championship in men’s basketball

In 2015, the Buffalo Bulls men’s basketball team won their first-ever Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship. Coached by Bobby Hurley, the Bulls finished the season with a 23-9 record, including a 12-6 record in MAC play.

The Bulls’ road to the championship began with a 88-74 victory over Central Michigan in the MAC tournament quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Bulls faced the Akron Zips, who had won the MAC championship the previous year. In a tightly contested game, the Bulls emerged victorious with a 68-59 win. In the championship game, the Bulls faced the top-seeded Central Michigan Chippewas and won 89-84 to secure their first MAC championship in program history.

The Bulls’ championship season was led by several standout players, including guard Shannon Evans II, who was named the MAC tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Evans scored 24 points in the championship game and also hit several key free throws down the stretch to help the Bulls secure the victory.

The 2015 MAC championship was a significant achievement for the Bulls men’s basketball program, which had only made one previous appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2005. The team went on to make two more NCAA Tournament appearances in 2018 and 2019, establishing the Bulls as one of the top programs in the MAC.
