Portland’s return to the WNBA is official, as the league’s 15th franchise proudly revives the name Portland Fire, honoring the original team that competed from 2000 to 2002. The team, owned by Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal through RAJ Sports, also owners of the Portland Thorns, will tip off in 2026 alongside fellow expansion team Toronto Tempo. The Bhathals paid $125 million for the franchise, signaling their deep commitment to women’s sports. RAJ Sports is also building a first-of-its-kind, $150 million shared training facility in Hillsboro for both the Fire and Thorns, set to open in 2026. The Fire’s branding, announced July 15, 2025, combines modern design with Portland pride and rich WNBA history. With over 10,000 season ticket deposits already secured, Portland fans have shown they’re ready to bring the heat. As interim president Clare Hamill said, the Fire are here to reignite the city’s connection to the game.
