1976 - Lary Bird Era

In 1975  Larry Bird begins playing for the Indiana State Sycamores as a freshman. He leads the team in scoring with 32.8 points per game and is named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the YIn ear.

1976  Bird helps lead the Sycamores to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Indiana State makes it to the Sweet 16 before losing to Michigan.

In 1977  Bird leads the nation in scoring with 30.3 points per game and is named a consensus First Team All-American. Indiana State makes it to the NCAA Tournament again, but loses to Arkansas in the Elite Eight.

In 1978 Bird leads the Sycamores to an undefeated regular season and a #1 ranking in the AP Poll. He is named the National Player of the Year and the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. Indiana State makes it to the NCAA Tournament Championship Game, but loses to Magic Johnson and the Michigan State Spartans.

After the 1978 season, Bird leaves Indiana State and enters the NBA Draft. He is selected with the 6th overall pick by the Boston Celtics and goes on to have a Hall of Fame career in the NBA.
