2013 - The Butler basketball team joins the Big East Conference

Here are some details about the Butler basketball team’s joining the Big East Conference in 2013:

The Big East Conference underwent a major realignment in 2013, when seven non-football schools (the so-called “Catholic 7”) decided to leave the conference and form a new Big East, retaining the name and the rights to hold the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden. The remaining football schools reorganized as the American Athletic Conference (The American), while several other schools joined or left either conference. Butler was one of the schools that joined the new Big East, along with Xavier and Creighton. Butler had previously been a member of the Horizon League until 2012, when it moved to the Atlantic 10 Conference for one season. Butler’s move to the Big East was announced on March 20, 2013, and became effective on July 1, 2013.
Butler’s head coach at the time was Brad Stevens, who had led the Bulldogs to two consecutive national championship game appearances in 2010 and 2011. However, Stevens left Butler to become the head coach of the Boston Celtics on July 3, 2013, and was replaced by Brandon Miller . Butler’s first season in the Big East was not very successful, as the Bulldogs finished with a 14-17 overall record and a 4-14 conference record, placing ninth out of ten teams. They lost to Seton Hall in the first round of the Big East tournament.
