1954 - The Central Michigan men’s basketball team wins its first MAC championship

In 1954, the Central Michigan men’s basketball team won its first Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship. The Chippewas, led by head coach Ted Kjolhede, finished the season with a record of 16-6 and a conference record of 10-2.

The championship season was highlighted by several key victories, including a 71-63 win over Western Michigan that clinched the MAC title for the Chippewas. Central Michigan also recorded victories over Eastern Michigan, Toledo, and Bowling Green during the season.

The team was led by several standout players, including center Ron Belcher and guard Gary James. Belcher was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, while James was the team’s top perimeter shooter.

Central Michigan’s MAC championship in 1954 marked a significant milestone for the university’s men’s basketball program, and set the stage for future success. Over the years, the Chippewas have gone on to win several more MAC championships and have become one of the most respected basketball programs in the conference.
