Charles "Stretch" Murphy was one of the first dominant big men in basketball history and a cornerstone of Purdue University's success during the late 1920s. Standing 6-foot-6,he was an outstanding rebounder, defender and scorer whose quick outlet passes helped pioneer Purdue's fast-paced offense under coach Ward Lambert.
Murphy set the Big Ten single-season scoring record with 143 points in 1929 and captained Purdue to an undefeated Big Ten championship in 1930. After college, he played professionally for the Chicago Bruins and Indianapolis Kautskys, earning recognition as one of the greatest players of basketball's pre-NBA era.
He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1960.
