Quarterback Ryan Clement and running back Rod Smart, famously known as “He Hate Me,” became household names in XFL history. Despite their thrilling performances, the Outlaws ended the season with a 4–6 record, narrowly missing the playoffs.
Another dominant XFL football team of 2001 was the Los Angeles Xtreme, led by head coach Al Luginbill. Quarterback Tommy Maddox, who later joined the NFL, became the league’s MVP after an outstanding season. With a balanced offense and sharp defense, the Xtreme finished 8–2 and went on to win the inaugural XFL Championship, defeating the San Francisco Demons 38–6 in a one-sided final. When the league was revived in 2020, it brought back the same passion but with modernized play. Among the new XFL football teams, the DC Defenders quickly gained popularity. Under coach Pep Hamilton and quarterback Cardale Jones, the Defenders showcased a strong start, winning their first two games. The Houston Roughnecks became another standout XFL team in 2020. Coached by June Jones and powered by quarterback P.J. Walker, they achieved a perfect 5–0 record before the season ended abruptly.
